Quite honestly, how can you go wrong with a debut single called ‘House on Haunted Hill’ that is reminiscent of ‘Powerslave’ era Iron Maiden and comes packaged with two band stickers and pin badges?
Hailing from Co. Antrim, Conjuring Fate is the latest in a long line of up and coming bands from Northern Ireland. A NWONIHM if you will.
‘House on Haunted Hill’ was recorded last year at Hornland Studios, the home recording studio of founding member and guitarist Phil Horner. Horner and impressive vocalist Tommy Daly have been the mainstays of the band since its inception in 2005. That’s ten years of hard, Heavy Metal slog to get to this stage of releasing their debut EP. With a now settled line up of Karl Gibson, Steve Legear and Bogdan Walczak on guitar, bass and drums respectively, the five piece have produced an effort to be proud of.
The first thing that struck me about the cd is how professional the whole package looks. Kym Horner, wife of Phil, provides the artwork and band photography of which both are utterly splendid. Also, on the inside cover, we get the lyrics to all three songs plus we’re told which guitarist plays which solo! Incidentally, track three, ‘Backwoods Witch’, along with a cracking riff, contains no less than four superb guitar solos! Solo 2 being a guest appearance by Steve Moore of Stormzone.
‘Mirror Mirror’ is almost six minutes of pure metal. If you’re a fan of Helloween or, again ‘Killers’ era Iron Maiden, then you’ll certainly dig this track. The twin guitars of Phil Horner and Karl Gibson shine throughout.
Title track ‘House on Haunted Hill’ though is the band’s diamond. Written by Horner and Daly but all five members share the credit for creating such an outstanding piece of heavy rock! If it had been recorded in the early 1980’s it would be considered a classic.
There’s nothing new or contemporary about Conjuring Fate. They’re a band with their roots set firmly in heavy metal. They are however, excellent musicians and superb songwriters. If the NWONIHM takes off they’ll be jostling at the front of the queue! With other superb tracks like ‘Trust No One’, ‘I Want Out’ and ‘Land of the Damned’ in their canon, their debut album is destined to be a guaranteed winner!
